Back to Basics: Sweatpants

As part of our weekly Back to Basics series, we are shining a spotlight on great wardrobe staples that are made to last. Because timeless basics are the most sustainable pieces you can buy.

Sportswear and athleisure trends come and go but we have always admired the enduring quality of a chic sweatpant. No longer a sloppy, unshapely look, the new season sweatpant is tailored and comes in a variety of elegant colours. The trick to this shape is to choose a waistline that suits your body shape. A high waist will flatter or give the illusion of curves. Alternatively a lower rise feels more modern but isn’t for everyone. Importantly, the ankle should be tapered or fitted, allowing you to wear them with pretty much any style of shoe you like.

When it comes to styling your sweatpants, the possibilities are pretty varied. A simple t-shirt tucked into the front paired with a tailored blazer makes for a great off duty or weekend look. To take your sweatpants to work, a simple cotton shirt and heels are a good way to dress them up. Whichever way your wear them, be sure to choose a colour you love and that goes with a good portion of your wardrobe.

Tips on caring for your Sweatpants
  • The beauty of these trousers are that they are super easy to take care of.
  • Usually made from crease proof fabrics, you can hang or fold them.
  • Most are dry clean only so make sure you have them cleaned once or twice a season.
  • If they lose their elastic, this is something your local tailor can help you fix.
  • Keep zips etc in working order, make friends with your local tailor and they can do this for you.
  • If your sweatpants are wool or cashmere, make sure to keep them folded in a drawer and protected from moths in a sealed bag.
Tips on Trend Led Dressing

If you’re wearing a bright pair of track pants, wear with a neutral coloured knit and shoes. Alternatively if you have black or navy sweatpants then try wearing a patterned top and colourful, statement shoes to balance the look.
